If you already have a ferret or are thinking of purchasing one, you should consider the time it takes to care for them. Ferrets come from the mustelid family and are exotic animals. This means when they reach adulthood they do tend to have odor. It is a good choice to de-scent and neuter your ferret if you are not breeding them.
When you purchase two or more ferrets, de-scenting them is a good idea to make sure there is no litter born. Ferrets also need vaccinations, so it is a good idea to take any new purchased animals to veterinarian for a regular check up.
Ferrets should have balanced diet. You can purchase quality ferret food or cat food at any local pet store. All you need to do is make sure the brand of food you choose has at least 20% fat and 35% protein. Ferrets need higher fat levels than felines. Balanced fats (like poultry fat) make good blend of essential fatty acids and are much better for ferrets.
Your ferret should always have fresh water available. Ferrets drink more water from bowls then bottles. But it is important to change the water in the bowl at least once a day. If you cannot, then it might be better to use the bottle.
Your ferret should also be provided with safe housing. Try to provide them a cage that is safe and easy to clean and at the same time roomy. While choosing a cage spacing is very important. If your ferret can force its head through any part of the cage then it is in real danger. Also make sure you ferrets feet don’t get caught in the cage you purchase. Ferrets love to play and run around in the cage. So place them in a proper cage else they will get hurt.
Ferrets usually sleep 15 to 20 hours per day. They love to hide in dark padded areas. For both play and sleep, sleeping hammocks and sacks are great. You can also place a sheet over a part of their cage to give them a nice and quite private area to play and sleep.
Ferrets tend to chew things. Anything that is within the reach of your ferret can be a hazard. Check your ferret’s cage often for anything it is chewing. If your ferret eats wrong things it can cause obstruction in its intestines and may need to be removed surgically.
Ferrets can be social, you should introduce you ferret to other people once it is 30 days old. You should also let you ferret out of their cage in a ferret proof room twice a day. Make sure you never leave them unattended once outside their cage as they are in danger of getting hurt if left unattended.
Ferrets love to interact. They also love cuddling and is a great feeling when they do it with you. Ferrets can also be litter trained and it is a good idea to introduce them to a litter box as soon as possible for a higher success rate.
Ferrets are a fun and loving pet. The more you care for them and interact with them, the longer and healthier life they will have.
